Dusseldorf used to be a favourite destination for city types, with its financial sector and status as one of the best places for culture within the whole of the country. Founded hundreds of years ago, Dusseldorf has been an influential place throughout its history. Yet it is very modern and has firmly embraced the 21st Century.
It is the home to Carnival, a cultural event which starts in Dusseldorf on the 11th of November, at precisely 11.11 a.m and is a really interesting spectacle. However, there is plenty to see and do whenever you arrive. There is some fantastic beer, known as the Altbier, a very dark beer which is also quite strong. Some of the bars and inns have a great atmosphere and a very pleasant evening can be had sampling the Altbier and just soaking up the gemutlichkeit' or ambience. Theatres and museums, as well as art galleries seem to be on every street, with a really broad array of exhibits on offer and several specialist museums, for example, the Goethe Museum or the Hetjens Museum which is a ceramics museum. Lovers of architecture will find all kinds of buildings from very modern to much more traditional buildings and there is a wonderful collection of 8 bridges which span the Rhine. You should even go for a cruise along the Rhine and see the city from the water, when she is shown at her very best. Travel to Dusseldorf is quite straightforward, with many international carriers offering flights to Dusseldorf, including KLM and Jet2.
