On the extreme south of Croatia is an old city called Dubrovnik. It is along the Adriatic Sea coast, and is one of the most prominent resorts of the Mediterranean. It has a seaport and is listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city of Dubrovnik is nicknamed Pearl of the Adriatic. This city was built from maritime trade. In the Middle Ages, it actually became the only city-state to complete with Venice. Today, Dubrovnik is still one of the most beautiful towns of the Mediterranean. It is considered a major accomplishment to be seen at one of the luxurious hotels in Dubrovnik.
There are also many educational institutions in Dubrovnik. These include; the University of Dubrovnik, a Tourist College, a Nautical College, American College of Management and Technology, an Institute of History of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a University Centre for Postgraduate Studies of the University of Zagreb. Dubrovnik Airport is about 20km south of the city. The airlines that service this airport are; Zagreb, Aer Lingus, Hapag Lloyd Express, Estonian Air, SN Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, British Airways, Thompsonfly, Flybe, Easyjet, Ryanair, amongst others. Once in Dubrovnik, be sure to take note of the walls around the city, as they are unusual; they are from four to six metres thick on the one side, but get thinner towards the sea. There is also now a system of towers and turrets designed to protect the city from its vulnerabilities, but also enhance its picturesque quality. If you are there during the annual, month-long, Dubrovnik Summer Festival, you will be treated to a very cultural event. For this festival, the city gives city keys to artists who entertain the people of the city and their guests with games, concerts, and live plays.
