Mini-Guide To Calcutta

Calcutta is also known as Kolkata, which is the capital of West Bengal in India. It has enjoyed a rich and varied history and nearly everyone has heard of Calcutta and the role it played in helping India gain freedom from British Rule. It is now the fourth largest city in India with a population of over 5 million people and it has a very tropical climate, with very hot and humid summers (very hot in May and June, around 40 celcius ) and winters which are very mild, with temperatures around 12 to 14 celsius. The period June till September is the monsoon season and best avoided.

Local Airports In Calcutta

Any other time of the year is great for visiting Calcutta though and it is a fascinating place to experience. Poverty is quite an issue in Calcutta and you may find it hard to be constantly asked for money. But that aside, there is lots to do in Calcutta, which was the former capital of India and has always been seen as an important cultural and very literary city. There are many buildings to be seen and admired, with much Gothic and Baroque architecture, as well as some Roman and Oriental. It is often referred to as being the City of Palaces, such is the prevalence of palatial buildings within the city. The Indian Museum is also well worth a visit. This is the oldest museum in the Asian continent and houses an amazing collection of both art, ancient relics and natural history exhibits. Food is simply outstanding in Calcutta with so many different types of dishes to sample, all of which seem to be created in no time at all, yet are truly delicious. So for a real cultural treat Calcutta really does tick every box. It is also quite easy to get here, with flights available from London via British Airways and Air India.
